week. good morning, everyone. welcome to "early start". >> it's tuesday, june 4th. it's 5:00 a.m. in the east. happening right now, wildfires raging in three states, destroying homes, disrupting lives and pushing firefighters to their limits. hundreds of families are in harm's way. dozens of acres scorched in evergreen, colorado. the fire there 0% contained. residents are warned to remain tkeupbl lent. there's an 8,000 fire north of pecos, new mexico where 100 homes have been evacuated. and the 32,000 acre powerhouse has destroyed six homes. hundreds more are at risk. stephanie elam is live from lake hughes, california. so much of this under growth, 1929 the last time they had a big fire through there. so you're talking about a teurpbd box, quite frankly, much of california?

>> yeah. and they are talking about a certain region around here the time it burned. yes, a lot of brush here. it was the right kindle for a fire. what a difference a day makes. it's easier to breathe. while you take a look, it is still closed to mainly everybody else. but people are allowed to come in here and get to their homes. that's good news. but it's not the same situation throughout the western region. >> into the night, firefighters in colorado battling a wildfire that erupted in the foothills west of denver monday forcing thousands to evacuate are now being allowed to return home. the blue bell fire burned dangerously close to homes. it is the latest outbreak from out west. from colorado to santa fe, new

mexico, to palmdale, california, these flames consuming much in their path. >> that hill, this hill and that hill were all going at once. >> it's devastating. and i feel really bad for all my neighbors. and i feel really lucky for the firefighters to have saved our house it. >> was spread over 8,000 acres forcing residents to evacuate. >> it's nerve-racking not knowing if it's okay or not. >> it has pack the a punch scorching 30,000 acres, threatened 1,000 homes, destroyed at least six. homes like the one where the stilson family used to live reduced to rubble. the family is used to wildfires because they're a family of firefighters. patrick stilson now picking up the pieces of his parents's

chances. >> high water threatened small towns. sandbags and temporary dikes often the only thing between a surge water and mainstream. commercial districts are already under water. the rising river closes roads. in most places the water is expected to crest an inch high from what is regarded major flooding. what makes this event so dramatic is that five months ago the river was at record lows. >> i'm standing on the exposed bottom of the mississippi river. >> since then the river shot up 45 feet. >> there had been fears they would have closed it due you to

barges. >> it was too dangerous to navigate because the water was so high. martin satisfiage, cnn, west alton, missouri. a search for five missing people in oklahoma. officials make a grim discovery in their search yesterday. the body of an 8-year-old girl who drowned in a river in oklahoma city. there have been 18 in that state since friday. >> there is another big story developing this morning. the potential for more heavy rains in florida from a storm system that may soon become a tropical depression. eer already in that season. >> definitely a tough time of year. still dealing with tornado season. of course the hurricane season. what we are watching is the remnants of barbara. as this

moisture. florida has had so much rain. seven inches in seven days. this is the next five days. definitely a potential for flooding in this area. keep in mind in january of this year, mississippi relative, around st. louis was negative 4.5 feet. now they're in a major flooding stage -- at 40 feet, over the flooding stage 30 feet. look at all the rain expected to accumulate there. very, very tough out there. >> be careful what you wish for. all that water. >> we talked about the drought. corn planting was a couple weeks ago. they don't want too much water

too soon because of planting thaul corn. investigators say armando torres iii was kidnapped by armed men at his father's ranch on may 14th. they have not been heard or seen since. corporal torres is an iraq war veteran. fbi is asking anyone with information to come forward. the so-called blade runner back in court for the first time. a south african judge agreeing to post post until august 19th. a normal five-count indictment in the ricin letter count. stands accused of sending letters with a toxin to the president. he allegedly tried to pin the

crimes on a former friend with who worked on an elvis percent nator. he could face life in prison. what a strange case. and last year's david petraeus's scandal is suing saying her p privacy was violated. petraeus resigned his post as cia director. at the time kelly was said to have exchanged an inappropriate message with general john allen. neither were ever charged with a crime. interior department reversing itself saying visitors to ellis island should be screened before embarking to the landmark. a security screening facility has been proposed in battery

a new report shines a spotlight on how the irs handles its own business expenses. rooms that go for 1500 to 3,500 a night. training videos cost the irs more than $60,000. this one, as you can see, features a gilligan's island theme. >> we will hear from conservative groups who say they were unfairly targeted by the irs. >> her tea party group unfairly scrutinized by the irs.

today in the rose garden. a second person reportedly died in violent clashes during anti-government protests in turkey. the 22-year-old was killed during demonstrations by unknown suspects carrying firearms. security forces who earlier unleashed tear gas and water cannons on them during the protest. orthodox jewish high school kids and their chaperones said several students wouldn't stay in their seats. one chaperone said they did comply and they overreacted. they were put on other flights and had to be split up. a woman telling her story after fighting off a would-be kidnapper. she felt someone brush by her. she spotted a masked man running around the back of the house

from west alton, missouri. that's near st. louis. there could be severe flooding in the region today. the mississippi river current my more than 10 feet bove flood stage. severe storms claimed 18 lives since friday. a slight risk of more dangerous weather today. first, i want to talk about all the rain. this is the big picture. actually made its way into the gulf. they have had seven inches of rain in seven days. torrential rain out there. the next five days, the rain continue to go accumulate with all the tropical moisture being picked up into the system. that's one place we have seen the flooding. take a look at all the moisture. more rain in the forecast. ten feet above major flood stage. beginning of the year, they were

four and a half feet below. more showers in the forecast especially by wednesday. we were mentioning the severe weather threat. slight risk is still out there. once again where we typically see it over oklahoma, kansas, portions of texas. boston fire chief stepping down ending a nasty battle with his deputies. 13 sent a letter saying he failed to show leadership, including after the mayor than bombings. abraira came into office in 2011, the first who did not move through the ranks. he said he never had the support of many of his firefighters. the parents of the boston marathon bombing suspects are revealing details their only conversations with their son since he was placed under arrest. they have played audio conversations during video on british television. live in moscow with all the details. good morning, phil.

>> reporter: hello, john. yes, this phone conversation took place one week ago, we're told. we understand the parents and their son were not able to talk about any details about the case itself. it was very brief but emotional. the parents asked lots of question about their son's welfare. they asked at one point, are you in pain? he said, no, of course not. he's been eating for some time. he is being fed rice and chicken and insists everything's fine. his mother said those were the sorts of things he was able to say under the circumstances. she was surprised by how calm he was. she thought he would want to know what is happening to him and why. he was calming her down, insisting everything will be fine. >> what are his patients saying about the fact of this conversation, phil? >> the question of guilt or innocence, they say, did not come up at all.

and for them they say it is not an issue. they believe both of their sons were the victims of a setup. so on this they were asked just what they thought of their son's guilt. the mother said it's terrible what happened but i know my kids did not do it. the father said, the child is in shock. he doesn't understand what is happened to him. i am in shock because justice has vanished. there is no justice. it's impossible to understand what happened. now, we do know from u.s. officials that russians were concerned about the radicalization of tamerlan and his mother. they didn't address this specifically. tamerlan and his mother commented and spoke with some pride about just how religious she is and how religious her son tamerlan was, and how they tried to pass their beliefs on to the younger son. >> still seemingly in a state of

and i said not with the kids at home. >> seacat denied ever making threats to his wife. >> she said you threatened to kill her. >> what? >> you threatened to burn the house down and threatened to make it look like she did it. >> that is [ bleep ]. >> prosecutors will likely wrap up their case tuesday. then it's on to the defense. brett seacat is expected to testify to try to convince this jury that he did not kill his wife. our thanks to ted for that report. ft. hood massacre suspect hassan can represent himself in his own court-martial. the army psychiatrist accused of killing 13 people is physically and mentally capable of defending himself against she's murder charges. he fired his private lawyer in 2011. jury selection in this case begins on wednesday.
